Holy crap, hey! This week marks the 20th anniversary of 2K Games’ release of the first Mafia game. Reason enough to give the title extra attention, announce a new game and give fans of the franchise a gift on Steam.
WANT editor Mark Hofman is crazy about games, but missed the Mafia franchise completely. How he managed that is beyond me, but this week he gets the ultimate chance to right his wrongs.
Free touch of nostalgia on Steam
Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven was released on August 29, 2002. Twenty years ago, in other words. As far as 2K Games is concerned, reason enough for a party and a party needs presents. For fans of the franchise, or freaks like me, the opportunity to experience the game.
On Twitter the studio announces that the game, completely free, is available for download on Steam. From Thursday, September 1 through Monday, September 5, players around the world can play Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. Party!

In 2002, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven was released: the very first major open-world crime game to appear after Grand Theft Auto III. It was not only a huge success, but also the beginning of a mighty trilogy. In 2010, players could let loose with Mafia II and Mafia III appeared in 2016.
2K Games working on new title
Where those first two games were developed by 2K Games, Hangar 13 grabbed the third game. The studio also made it clear this week that fans have something to look forward to.
There isn’t much information yet, but the studio is busy developing a new Mafia game. When exactly the game will appear and where it will be set is not yet known. The fact remains that the game is seriously coming our way.
