Dear Nintendo: Can we finally get these things in Mario kart 9?

Mario Kart 9 looks to be released simultaneously with the Nintendo Switch 2. We hope to see these new features in the game.

With the long-awaited announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 came clarity not only about the new console, but also about the future of Mario Kart.

It looks like we will get Mario Kart 9 at the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. As much as we want to play this game, we do have a small wish list of features.

Mario Kart 8 sets the bar very high

It has been almost a decade since Nintendo released Mario Kart 8. This game for on the flopped Wii U was revolutionary just like its console predecessor, Mario Kart Wii. It brought us wacky tracks on which you could even race against gravity.

When the Nintendo Switch came out, Mario Kart 8 was given a major update. With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we got even more racetracks and even more characters. To this day, it is the best-selling game for the Nintendo Switch.

So will Mario Kart 9 (if it’s going to be called that) have it easy? Absolutely not, as the previous installment set the bar extremely high. Judging from the Switch 2 trailer, we can say that the game looks slick and grand. But not only graphically, we hope to see new things.

These features we want to see in the new Mario Kart

Although the festive months are already behind us, we still want to make a small wish list for MK9 in terms of features. So, Nintendo, should you want to make any last-minute additions, especially consider these features.

Single-player story mode

Mario Kart is at its best when you’re racing with your mates in a blood-fanatic way. The question of whether the friendship then still exists after everyone has crossed the finish line is something we take for granted. An addition for single-player would not be wrong, if only to save friendships.

This story mode would additionally act as a tutorial for new players. This wouldn’t have to be a big story, but a set of challenges like we saw in Mario Kart DS would already be cool.

Characters from other Nintendo games

With MK8, non-Mario characters were also added to the list of racers. A nice addition, especially since it involved some unusual choices. For example, you were quite often overtaken by Link from The Legend of Zelda, or by Villager from Animal Crossing.

That the roster of racers won’t be as lavish as the last Super Smash Bros. we understand, but we’d still like to see a few more additions. Could we finally get behind the wheel as Kirby or Samus? Let’s hope so.

New play mode for online

In a game that revolves around karting, it is obvious that the main objective is racing. Nevertheless, we have long known a battle mode in Mario Kart. Here you have two choices: the so-called balloon battle or a battle to collect coins.

Nice game options, but a bit dated by now. It would be nice to see an addition to that for a change. I MK8 we already saw such a newcomer: renegade roundup, which was actually a kind of police game. MK9 could certainly add something new to that.

Costumes for the racers

Mario Kart 7 brought us fully composable kart cars for the first time. That not only affected your handling and speed, but also how flashy your car would look. We’d like to build on that, but this time with the characters.

It would be nice to be able to earn multiple outfits or skins for the characters. Mario Odyssey already indicated how fun it is to hoist Mario in all sorts of outfits. By the way, we are not advocating skins that have to be bought with microtransactions or with real currency. We have plenty of those kinds of games anno 2025.

Mario Maker x Mario Kart

A new installment in the Mario Kart series obviously means a lot of new race tracks. Nintendo usually manages to build beautiful tracks that are challenging and fun time after time. But the community can do something about it, too.

Just look at the amazing creations in the Super Mario Maker games. There you could roll up your own sleeves to build challenging or surprising levels. Such a mode would be nice to see in MK9 as well. Guaranteed there would be more than a thousand top levels online within a week.
