With more than seven years on the clock, the proverbial fall has arrived for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s conveniently portable game console has sold more than 132 million copies worldwide and has a very impressive catalog of games.
As the Switch gets closer to its end, the buzz surrounding its successor is getting louder. The Switch 2 will most likely come in 2025. But what if you’re eager to buy a Nintendo Switch now? Is it wise to get one now or is it better to save your pennies for the successor?
The Nintendo Switch is still alive and kicking
A successor may be on the way; but the Nintendo Switch is still alive and kicking. Yes, the game console has been around for over seven years, but that doesn’t diminish its quality. The Switch is a daily staple for many of those 132 million-plus users.
So for online games like Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. or Animal Crossing, you’ll still find plenty of people to play with. Also, things like the Nintendo Eshop and other similar applications really won’t just be stopped when the successor arrives.

For those who still want to get rid of seven-year-old hardware, there is still the Nintendo Switch OLED. This one has a nicer screen and just a bit better components so even the very latest games still run at decent quality.
There are still plenty of games on parade
Mario kart 8, Super Smash Bros, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild / Tears of the Kingdom, Pokémon Legends: Arceus: the list of absolute top games on the Nintendo Switch seems endless. Nintendo only produces games for their own consoles, and these games are (almost) always of very high quality.
The Nintendo Switch is no exception and, in fact, is the pre-eminent leader in quality games. And those games just keep coming out. There are some great titles planned for 2024 and early 2025 as well. Think of games like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Metroid Prime 4.
There are also still a lot of 3rd-party games and indie games coming out on the console. In this, not only will a younger audience be served, adults also have plenty to play on the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch remains unapproachable in its class
Nintendo learned a lot from their previous console: the Wii U. A Wii with a separate screen. That sounded nice, but the fact that your screen couldn’t take you further than five feet from the Wii was a big flop. Nintendo learned from that, because one of the biggest pluses of the Switch is how convenient it is to carry around.
In recent years, other major game companies have also taken a stab at a portable console. PlayStation had its PlayStation Portal, Valve its Steam Deck. None came close to the Switch.
The fact that you can both plug the console into the TV and take it with you wherever you go remains an unapproachable feature. Add motion controls to that, and the Switch is and always will be unique.
