Do you think the Nintendo Switch 2 is going to cost a lot of money? The price is nothing compared to that of this particular version of the GameCube.
How much will it cost? Many a Nintendo fan asked themselves out loud when they were watching the trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Whether it will be 500 or 600 euros, it is nothing compared to the price for which a very exclusive Nintendo console was sold. One of the very first prototypes of the Nintendo GameCube was auctioned off, and you can buy more than a hundred Nintendo Switch 2s for that.
GameCube games are among the world’s best
At the beginning of this millennium, Nintendo released their newest console: a purple box with oddly shaped controllers. This successor to the Nintendo 64 attracted a lot of attention, as it was the first time Nintendo delivered their games on a disc.

Although the console was not particularly popular – especially compared to the success of the Nintendo Switch – it had a great list of games. Many of those games remain among the absolute Nintendo top to this day.
For example, you could play hits like Super Smash Bros. Melee, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Luigi’s Mansion and Pikmin on these. Many of these games got their sequels on the Nintendo Switch or received remakes in recent years.
Extraordinary prototype GameCube surfaced
Upon its release in 2001, the GameCube was about $200. With current inflation, that’s about $350. There is still active trading and bartering with the GameCube, as it is a sought-after gadget for collectors.
That’s because there are many different versions of the GameCube in circulation. The price varies. But the amount being asked for the GameCube that has been on sale on Ebay since last week beats everything.

This special “Space World” GameCube will cost you a whopping US€100,000. That’s over 96,048.50 euros. So is that worth it to be able to play your favorite games on that? Not even, because ridiculously, the thing doesn’t even work!
What makes this GameCube so expensive?
Suppose you buy the thing, you’re $100,000 lighter and you still can’t play Mario Kart Double Dash on it. So why would you want it? Because this Space World edition of the console is the only one of its kind.
When the GameCube was announced in early 2000, it naturally received extra attention at the Nintendo Space World event. On a stage in front of a large audience, three variants of the console were carried forward so the world could see Nintendo’s new generation for the first time.
So these consoles were not meant to be used at all, but to show the design to the world. So an interesting piece of Nintendo history. But whether that’s really worth so many kroner to you? Might be better to save your money for the Nintendo Switch 2 after all.
