Insomniac Games managed to capture the hearts of all Marvel fans in 2018 with a masterpiece of a game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to that masterpiece and man, it’s just even better.
Over the past two weeks, Mark went all out with the game for the PlayStation 5. The result: this is not a review, but praise for the perfect sequel to the perfect superhero game.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 continues a masterpiece
After playing Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), something unique happened. My brain was looking not for something new, not for something groundbreaking, but purely for more of the same. And believe me: I hate more of the same.
Insomniac Games, however, managed to touch me in a very special way. The developer tells the well-known story of Marvel’s superhero in its very own way and throws fantastic gameplay against it as well.

After the intriguing approach to iconic villains like Doctor Octopus and the successful introduction of Miles Morales, it’s not surprising that fans are waiting to see what else is in store.
The result is the introduction of Kraven the Hunter, Harry Osborn, Venom and many more characters. All the while, this time you’re not just playing with Peter Parker or Miles Morales. On paper, it already becomes clear how great this game is for fans.
And then the game has yet to begin at all.
A bruising good story
It’s hard to tell what makes Spider-Man 2 so good without throwing in any kind of spoilers. After all, the game is full of gripping moments and elements you might not have expected so soon.

Still, I’m going to do my best, because those surprise elements are half the fun. All you need to know, as far as I’m concerned, is that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a slightly less emotional story than the first part and a lot more action.
Insomniac does a fantastic job of this, especially by combining the stories of Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The story drags you into digital New York City almost from the first minute and doesn’t let go after that either.
Let me put it this way: over the years, we’ve gotten a lot of Spider-Man movies that I could really enjoy as a fan. But if there’s one approach I would love to see in theaters, it’s this one. It’s that good.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is more of the same
However, the gameplay of the game is also good, although that is not very difficult considering it feels practically the same as the first part.

You swing through a crazy New York in your far too tight spandex suit (because that’s what it is) and, in between the main story, try to rid the streets of crime, as befits a true Spider-Man.
There are side missions that build on the previous games, unique missions you can play briefly and new separate challenges. Think collecting Spider-bots, taking pictures or tackling evil characters related to the main story.
The combination between Miles Morales and Peter Parker, who occasionally help each other out, is really the only thing we can really call new. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 does indeed do more of the same, and that’s more than fine as far as I’m concerned.
Upgrade until you weigh an ounce
What does feel different, however, is the upgrade system. For example, in addition to unlocking unique outfits for both Peter and Miles, it is now possible to customize the appearance of those suits with different colors.

With the combination of the two characters, the skill tree system is also a bit more extensive. Not only do you choose a new fighting skill for Miles or Peter, but you can also choose both heroes. This results in faster swinging through the city or general skills within the combat system.
What I personally think is also cool is that, in addition to the standard upgrades for gadgets, you can spend just a little more time equipping your superhero’s suit with the most advanced technology.
All in all, the upgrades are also an excellent fit for the story, success and fun that comes with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the perfect sequel
Fun. That’s exactly what it is. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 faced sky-high expectations, but handles them extremely well. There is a 200% chance that any fan of the two previous games will be entertained by this new installment.

That person is just as likely to enjoy the slightly improved (and larger) New York, the small new elements and the story more.
Personally, I thought Marvel’s Spider-Man (and Miles Morales) was the perfect superhero game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is that, as far as I’m concerned, the perfect sequel to it.
