You may know Abubakar Salim as a voice actor from Assassins’ Creed, but he can do much more. Soon he will release his own game: Tales of Kenzera. The demo is already available to play now.
If you’ve played Assassin’s Creed: Origins, you’ve probably heard Abubakar Salim. He took on the role of Bayek. Now he is active in the gaming world as a gamemaker. With his company Surgent Studios, he is releasing and brand new game on Steam: Tales of Kenzera: ZAU.
Tales of Kenzera will be fully playable on April 23, 2024, but right now you can already play a demo. Through Steam Next Fest, everyone has the chance to try out hundreds of demos for free, including Tales of Kenzera.
Assassin’s Creed actor’s game
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is a story about shaman Zau. He comes from the fictional land of Kenzera. He is trying to get the soul of his father, back from the land of darkness. There he faces the god of death. Although you might envision some kind of grim reaper, in this story he is a fatherly figure. Strict, but fair and compassionate.
The story of Tales of Kenzera draws inspiration from ancient tales from eastern, middle and southern Africa. Also, Assassin’s Creed actor Salim used his own grief experiences for the story of when he lost his own father. He was eager to create an honest and emotional story by showing his own vulnerability.

Run, fight & jump in Tales of Kenzera
In terms of gameplay, the game keeps it fairly simple. Run, walk, jump and slide through a beautiful 2.5D landscape. Totally different from the Assassin’s Creed game Salim played in, in other words. Tales of Kenzera is more concerned with the story than complicated gameplay. However, there are several combat components to the game, normal enemies and the occasional boss fight here and there.
While fighting, you have a choice of various ranged and melee weapons. These weapons, you can also upgrade as you progress through the story. The fights are described as fights without too much fuss, relaxed and not too difficult. Nice and accessible, even for non-gamers.
The demo of Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, along with a host of other demos, is available to play through Feb. 12.
