Why you need not fear ads on your PlayStation 5 (for now)

It took PlayStation 5 owners a while to get scared, because suddenly they started seeing weird ads. What was going on?

Things don’t seem to be going very smoothly at Sony this week. Last night, the entire PlayStation Network was down, preventing some gamers from launching games. There was also an issue with ads suddenly showing up on the home screen of the PlayStation 5.

What exactly is going on and are these issues really all fixed now? Can you expect ads on your PlayStation 5 home screen?

Ads on your PlayStation 5

Companies are only too happy to find new ways to show more ads. For example, LG is planning to turn your smart TV screensaver into a billboard. Or consider YouTube, where an ad suddenly appears in your pause screen as soon as you pause your video.

Sony suddenly seemed to be planning something similar on the PlayStation 5, but that story is a bit different. Starting last Monday, users suddenly started seeing ads when they moved their joystick to a game icon. For example, Warhammer 40,000 suddenly showed up an ad from that game’s publisher, IGN reported.

Things got even weirder when players moved to Spider-Man: Miles Morales. When they landed on the icon, an ad for the movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse suddenly started up, with a reference that the movie would be coming to theaters soon. Incidentally, that movie has been out since June 2023.

The problems have been solved

PlayStation 5 owners were therefore worried that ads on the home screen would become a regular occurrence. However, it turns out that is not the case, as Sony now announces that it was a bug. Fortunately, it has since been fixed, so you don’t have to worry about being bombarded with ads.

The PlayStation Network glitch has also been fixed. So you can game again without being bothered by anything. Now just hope that ads stay away from the home screen for good. Also on the PlayStation 5 Pro. You can read much more about that device below.
