How Crash detection on iPhone 14 works

The iPhone 14 and the various versions of the Apple Watch are almost upon us. Prior to you having the gadgets in your hands, Apple comes out with a video explaining a new feature. Meet Crash Detection.

It’s one of the new iPhone 14 features that came up during Apple’s Far Out event. Crash Detection, should protect car occupants if an accident happens. How exactly it works Apple now shows in a new video.

Crash detection on the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch

Crash detection is available on the iPhone 14 models, 14 Pro models, Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra and SE. The feature in the devices can recognize a serious crash and thus save lives. When you experience such a crash, you may be unconscious, or may not have the capabilities to call emergency services. This new feature does it for you, so an ambulance can come right away.

Crash detection works through the new dual-core accelerometer that can measure G-forces up to 256Gs. There is also a high dynamic range gyroscope that can measure the impact of a crash. These features are in the new iPhone 14 and the Apple Watch and can only be used on those devices.

Building on the familiar

These capabilities build on existing components such as the barometer that can detect changes in pressure. The GPS then sees changes in speed, and the microphone can recognize loud noises. The algorithm behind it is designed with the data from a million hours of driving and crash data. Together, this creates a package that should recognize a crash.

There are different types of crashes that the Crash Detection on the iPhone 14 and other devices can recognize. These include head-on collisions, side collisions, rear-end collisions and vehicle rollover.

Don’t want to use Crash Detection at all? Then you can disable it through Settings.
