Why Apple may be saying goodbye to Dynamic Island again with the iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone 15 has yet to be released, but already there is a lot of speculation about its successor: the 16. And that’s not without reason: if rumors are to be believed, this one will get an update that people have been waiting for for years.

Last year, Apple managed to cause quite a stir with the iPhone 14 Pro. That wasn’t really because of the specs, but because of a notable piece of news. Namely, Apple came up with the Dynamic Island to camouflage the notch. Yet that may already be coming to an end with the iPhone 16 Pro, and that’s good news.

The iPhone 16 Pro without the Dynamic Island?

If the usually reliable Korean medium The Elec is to be believed, the Dynamic Island appears to be no longer needed with the iPhone 16 Pro. In fact, the Dynamic Island is supposed to hide the hardware for Face ID. It is currently still mounted on the top of the screen, which will soon no longer be necessary.

According to The Elec, with the iPhone 16 Pro, the facial recognition technology will go under the screen for the first time. So then there will be no need for a large notch, which the phone still has now, and so there will be no need for a Dynamic Island.

By the way, this does not mean that everything is immediately hidden away in the iPhone 16 Pro’s screen. There will still be an opening for the selfie camera. Perhaps the iPhone will then get a kind of punchhole that we know from various Android models.

This is what the screen should look like in the future

That punchhole may also only be temporary, because according to noted Apple analyst Ross Young, the selfie camera on the iPhone 18 Pro may even be tucked under the screen. He created an entire roadmap that makes the steps clear.

Based on the technical challenges remaining for under panel cameras to meet discerning brands’ quality requirements as well as panel manufacturers’ cost requirements, I still believe this roadmap makes sense for the iPhone. pic.twitter.com/3ck5X3sVcL

In doing so, Apple will likely proceed the same way it does now. New features will be introduced first on the Pro versions. A year later, these will then come to the regular iPhone. For example, on the “regular” iPhone 15 models, we can expect the Dynamic Island.
