Arlo Ultra 2 security camera review: track everything on your iPhone app

A while ago we received from Arlo a large package with several security cameras and a smart doorbell. In the latter area you already have a lot of choices of course, but when it comes to security cameras, we see that more and more is possible. And with a handy app on your iPhone or iPad you can keep track of everything. The first package we tested was the new Arlo Ultra 2.

The Arlo Ultra 2 is the premium product from Arlo. It’s the sequel to the regular Ultra, but really only has a few minor improvements over the original release. You now have the option to connect it to your smarthub via the 5 Ghz network, giving you a faster connection to grab. That’s a nice bonus, but of course too little to upgrade when you own the original camera. Especially since it’s not a cheap product.

But in this case, the Arlo Ultra 2 is worth it. The big advantage of this product is that it is very user friendly. You don’t have to mess around with wires to power the camera. They run on batteries. The only thing you need to do is place the holder on your wall. Just drill and screw a small hole and it’s done. Then you can place the camera in the holder with a powerful magnet and it will be really secure. And you don’t have to worry about the weather, because the camera is waterproof and can be activated without any problems.

The battery itself lasts for a while. I myself activated the camera mainly during the nights, limiting the activation area of the camera mainly to the door. So when a car on the street passes by, it shouldn’t switch on. In practice it does that quite often, but even then the battery lasts a long time. With a full battery you could probably use it for about three months. And when it runs out, you just remove it from the holder and fully charge it again within a couple of hours and put it back.

Keeping track of everything

If you have a full battery and everything is placed correctly, then you can use the app on your iPhone and iPad to keep track of everything. This app is super user friendly and in no time you have everything connected. From within the app you can view the live feed from the camera and see when someone is at the door. When you have activated it and someone comes with a package, you will get a notification. Just like a smart doorbell, you then have the possibility to hear the sound of that person through the camera and also talk back.

The image quality of the Arlo Ultra 2 is top notch in this regard. With a 4K resolution with HDR and a 180-degree view camera, you can see everything. Moreover, you can zoom in up to 12 times. So if you ever have the problem that someone breaks in and that person is caught on camera, you can see him or her very well. Even when it happens at night. With the flashlight on the camera the whole thing is well lit, but the nightvision is still pretty strong as well. It is really a relief compared to what you sometimes see on Opsporing Verzocht.

The only downside to the Arlo Ultra 2 is that it’s fairly pricey. There are several sets available and they are all a bit on the expensive side. But if you were already in doubt whether you wanted to get a smart doorbell in your home, then you might as well go for this, because that way you’ll kill two birds with one stone.
