Apple releases iPhone 16e instead of iPhone SE (and this is it)

Those who thought Apple’s new smartphone is called the iPhone SE are wrong. Meet the iPhone 16e.

We’ve known for a while that a new budget iPhone would be released this spring, but we all assumed the SE. Now it appears Apple is opting for the 16th.

The new iPhone 16e gets Apple’s A18 chip along with a 48 MP camera. We tell you all about the new model.

The iPhone 16e instead of the SE 4

To make things a little confusing, the iPhone 16e looks more like an iPhone 14 on the front. That’s because there is no Dynamic Island present, but an old-fashioned notch that incorporates the Face ID. So, unlike the old-fashioned SE, you can simply unlock your smartphone with your face.

On the inside of the iPhone 16e is the A18 chip, which you’ll also find in the regular iPhone 16. Apple does this for a reason: so the smartphone can support Apple Intelligence.

But perhaps the most special part of the iPhone 16e is the Apple C1. It is the first Apple-designed modem for mobile data. It is expected to come in the iPhone 17 as well. This will make the company a little less dependent on other chipmakers again.

On the back is one camera instead of the two or three you’re used to from regular models. The one on the iPhone 16e is a 48 MP Fusion camera with a 2x telephoto lens built in. Thus, according to Apple, you have two cameras in one. That camera lets you shoot video in 4K with Dolby Vision and 60 frames per second.

Like the regular iPhone 16, the 16e also has an action button on the side. You can give this the function you want. When Apple Intelligence comes to the Netherlands in April, you can also use it for visual AI.

This is how much you’ll pay for Apple’s new smartphone

The iPhone 16e comes out in two colors: matte black and matte white. However, colored cases are available. You can order the iPhone starting Friday, Feb. 21, and it will be available starting Feb. 28.

It may be more expensive than you’re used to, though. The entry-level model with 128 GB of storage will cost you 719 euros. 256 GB and 512 GB models are also available.
