Calling and internet via your smartphone is about to change

4G and 5G have been a household word for years when making calls or accessing the Internet via your smartphone. Yet that seems to be changing in the future.

We want to be reachable everywhere with our smartphone, and in the Netherlands that goes pretty well, because there are quite a few 5G masts. Still, we cannot call and use the Internet properly everywhere in the world, but there is a solution for that: satellite.

For example, you can already use your iPhone to send a message via satellite if you are in an emergency situation and have no coverage through a regular network. In addition, SpaceX has Starlink, for this you need a special receiver, but also with this you have a direct Internet connection via satellite.

How you will soon make calls and internet via satellite on your smartphone

Now a new solution is coming. So now Vodafone is also bringing its own satellite service. The company claims to be the first to release full broadband Internet via satellite for the smartphone. It can be used by any smartphone.

The service allows you to send messages, make video calls and surf the Internet in areas where there is no coverage due to a transmission tower. Compare it to the Emergency SOS feature of your iPhone only with even more features.

Initially, the service for calling and Internet on your smartphone will be launched in a number of different European countries later this year. By 2026, more European countries should be covered. Where the Netherlands enters this timeline is still unknown.

Meanwhile, other Internet and calling providers are not sitting still either. For example, T-Mobile is working on a similar technology in cooperation with Starlink. For Starlink, you still need an external receiver now, but that should no longer be necessary for your smartphone in the future.

Still, there are some differences with Vodafone. For example, the service is only available in the United States and at first it only worked with Samsung smartphones. Since then, that has included the iPhone.

The service is currently still limited and in beta. For example, T-mobile users must register and it is initially only for text messages, not complete Internet and calling.

However, the T-Mobile and Vodafone services do work slightly differently than that Emergency SOS feature of the iPhone. With the latter, you have to point your smartphone at the sky and it only works in an emergency. However, the phone companies’ service should also just work in your will. Thus, they should soon do exactly what you also have with your regular connection.
