The past 24 hours felt like old times. A trip abroad to learn about the latest products from a major company. Milan was the stage, the Huawei Mate XS 2 the show.

Yesterday we let you know about the announcement of the new smartphone and what exactly it has to offer. Today I tell you what my first, very short, experience left for impression.

The Huawei Mate XS 2 in hands

There’s not much to say about the performance of the Huawei Mate XS 2, unfortunately I was able to use it a little too briefly for that. However, I can share with you how the device feels in the hand and whether the foldable smartphone makes a move in general.

It should be obvious: the Huawei Mate XS 2 is incredibly well made at first glance. The smartphone, thanks in part to its low weight, sits very comfortably in the hand. The thin screen provides a unique experience and makes the device very manageable. However, that screen is easily folded over, leaving you with a recognizable screen: a 6.8-inch screen as you are used to from the normal smartphone.

Is there anything to say about the way this screen still clips to the back? Yes. It doesn’t stay completely you-know-what. Especially once you use the Huawei Mate XS 2 in smartphone mode. You then mainly have a back that is full of fingerprints. Something that doesn’t help the look.

Does the foldable smartphone make a move?

The answer to the above question is simple, “Yes.” In my opinion, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is finally the most impressive result of further development of the 2019 Fold. The Huawei Mate XS 2 is another good follow-up to that.

The processor is more powerful, the camera system promises more and the battery life is better. For example, the smartphone can be charged to 90% within 30 minutes. Great, because the devices eat energy. There is also something to be said about the weight of the smartphone. With 255 grams, the smartphone is almost 20 grams lighter. A pleasant development.

To what extent the Mate XS 2 is actually a good development, I’ll tell you as soon as the smartphone arrives at our editorial office. By the way, don’t expect it to be available in the Netherlands anytime soon. Huawei has let it be known that this is all but certain.
