Gap iPhone 14 and 14 Pro bigger, but what difference does it really make?

The gap between the iPhone 14 (Max) and the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) will be larger than with the current devices. At least, that’s what reliable journalist Mark Gurman expects.

He makes this clear in his weekly newsletter Power On that he produces for Bloomberg. According to the journalist, the difference is in one important point: the chipset. But how bad is that?

Pro models iPhone 14 hits bigger gap

For the first time in iPhone history, the new model will not get a better chipset. At least, that’s the expectation Mark Gurman has based on information from sources. The Bloomberg technology journalist reports that the American company will provide the iPhone 14 with the A15 Bionic chip: the same chipset found in current models. This while the Pro models will be equipped with the A16 Bionic chip.

In any case, it ensures that this year’s iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will be more powerful than the cheaper variants. Although, to be honest, we don’t think this is a big deal.

Why that’s not a problem

There are two reasons why the lack of the latest chip in the iPhone 14 is not a problem. First, it has to do with a common rumor about the Pro models. It now seems all but certain that the devices will feature the updated 48-megapixel camera. That’s such a big upgrade that it will require more power to drive it. Considering the regular iPhone 14 won’t get the lens, this extra power probably won’t even be needed. Unnecessary cost, in other words.

Over the past 15 years, the iPhone has gotten faster on an annual basis. We are already at the point where smartphones offer unprecedented power, without being fully used on a regular basis. So this year’s A15 Bionic chip is perfectly adequate for the next model.

Only question we have is whether consumers will see any of this in the price. The chance that the new iPhone 14 (Max) will be cheaper is small. The chance that the new Pro and Pro Max will be more expensive…well, that’s likely.
