Iconic iPhone functionality likely never to return

If recent rumors were to be believed, Apple was busy trying to bring Touch ID back to life. Upcoming iPhone flagships could somehow implement the feature again, but according to the trustworthy Mark Gurman, that’s really sheer nonsense.

The Bloomberg journalist discusses the story in the new edition of Power On: his weekly newsletter on all things Apple.

Iconic iPhone functionality never to return

In 2017, we were introduced to Face ID: the facial recognition used to unlock iPhone models. Initially introduced for only a few models and anno 2022 the absolute standard. It has its advantages, it has its disadvantages.

Still, there are plenty of consumers who still prefer to lock and unlock their iPhone with their fingerprint. For those people, however, there seems to be bad news: in the coming iPhone generations, Apple is not stepping back to the locking method.

“Right now, I expect Face ID to be for the long term and Touch ID not to return to the iPhone anytime soon.”

Apple actually had the discussion internally, according to Mark Gurman, but the outcome seems clear. So Touch ID on your iPhone 15 is not to be expected.

What about the iPhone SE?

Those who want a smartphone with Touch ID anno 2022 can still get one, by the way. Apple released the iPhone SE (2022) earlier this year, where the home button with fingerprint scanner could still be found. Not very surprising, since the design of the iPhone 8 is still used for this model.

By the way, the next model is going to change this. At least, that’s the expectation. Whereas it was first thought that the iPhone SE (2022) would carry a design change, it is probably the next phone that will take care of this.
