The cameras of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have been upgraded to allow photos to be shot in 48MP resolution. To do so, you’ll just have to dive into the settings. That’s because this only works if you enable Apple ProRaw.

Unfortunately, this feature is not available for the standard iPhone 14 and the Plus. However, if you are one of the lucky ones with an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, you can get started with Apple ProRaw.

iPhone 14 Pro: what is Apple ProRaw?

ProRaw was introduced in 2020 for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. ProRaw is a file format for photos and can take users’ photos to the next level. The file format has returned ever since in Pro models, until the 14 Pro and Pro Max that is.

That higher level is because you have much more freedom when editing photos. For example, you can adjust the white balance, exposure and color tones of the raw photo. ProRaw files do take up a bit more space as a result. Other well-known file formats, such as JPEG and HEIF, throw away important elements of an image that you cannot recover.

Here’s how to set up ProRaw

Open Settings on an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max and then press Camera. Then press File Structures at the top and enable Apple ProRaw. Now when you go to your Camera app, you can tap the Raw icon to enable ProRaw on your iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max. Then make sure the resolution is set to 48MP, for those ultra-sharp snaps.

While shooting, you can turn ProRaw on and off whenever you want. This can be useful, for example, if you want to save storage space on your device. Would you rather use ProRaw as your default setting? Then go to Camera and press Save Settings. Then make sure Apple ProRaw is enabled here to save the setting.
