The number of iPhone users who have iOS 15 installed is disappointing, so Apple is moving to big guns. The company is withdrawing its security updates for iOS 14 so consumers will (hopefully) switch.
With this, Apple is forcing practically every user, who has a need, to switch to the new operating system.
Apple withdraws iOS 14 update for iOS 15
The most recent iOS 15.2.1 update is suddenly the only update available to iPhone users. Whereas devices with the previous operating system previously had access to the iOS 14.8.1 update, it is currently suddenly gone. That’s the message 9to5Mac, through a post on Github, manages to report. Apple seems to be switching to grossly inadequate updates and, thanks in part to the disappointing numbers, probably wants users to switch.
When you go to Settings -> Software Update on an iPhone running iOS 14, only the iOS 15.2.1 update will be visible. This has since been confirmed by the folks at 9to5Mac, multiple times. Previously, iOS 15 was shown as an option in this window. It seems that Apple has removed that option, probably around the iOS 15.2 update, for a while. What the reason is for that is not yet officially known.
It would be a logical move on Apple’s part considering that iOS 15’s numbers were not as good as iOS 14’s. That could be the result of the company not pushing iPhone users to install the update, for example.
Only 72% of iPhone users
This morning, colleague Wesley already wrote an article on the subject. Apple’s developer website, for example, shows that only 72% of iPhone users are equipped with iOS 15. In contrast to last year’s update, this is a nice decline. In this case, however, all devices from the past four years are equipped with the update.
More information about these figures? Wesley will gladly give you that in his article. You’ll get there via the link above.
