For years, pressure has been put by the EU on phone makers to all come up with the same port that can be used to charge a phone. This way you don’t have to buy a different charger for each smartphone. This is not only good for the environment but also good for your wallet. Apple has been working with Lightning for the iPhone for a long time, but that is about to change.
Charging an iPhone with USB-C
Apple, like many other smartphone makers, is moving to USB-C. A connection that the company already uses for the iPad, for example. In 2023, Apple’s phones will get their turn. That means the iPhone 15 will be the first with a USB-C connection.
This news comes from the usually reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He bases his news on a poll of several Apple suppliers. According to the analyst, the switch from Lightning to USB-C is a good one for several reasons. One is that USB-C allows the iPhone to charge faster. Something competitors are already eagerly taking advantage of. In addition, USB-C allows for faster data transfer. Of course, the benefits do depend on what iOS looks like in the future.

Not a new idea
Still, Kuo’s iPhone news is not entirely out of the blue. For years there have been rumors that Apple is switching from Lightning to USB-C. As mentioned, it already occurs on several iPad and Macs use Thunderbolt which is compatible with USB-C. However, just last year Kuo claimed that Apple was not working on USB-C.
However, it is possible that USB-C is an intermediate step for Apple. According to several sources, the company is toying with the idea of making the iPhone portless. Charging would then have to be done wirelessly. The same goes for transferring files.
