Oppo goes after Samsung and Apple even more with smartphones

Oppo is now one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world. Now it’s going to do something we know its competitors, like Samsung and Apple, are doing.

Oppo makes smartphones in all sorts of price ranges. The Chinese electronics manufacturer is certainly not doing this unseemly. Its flagship device is the Oppo Find X5, which could shake up the market quite a bit. Yet there is one aspect that is different from several other brands: the inside. Where other brands often make their own chips, Oppo does not. At least, until now.

Proprietary chips for Oppo

According to new reports, Oppo is now working on its own chip for its devices, reports Chinese medium ITHome. If all goes according to plan, the first phone with its own processor will hit the market in 2024. For this, the company is working with chip manufacturer TSMC. Apple also works with this Taiwanese company for its own chips in the various iPhone devices.

Oppo plans to design several functions of the chip itself. These include the chipset design, IP design, algorithm, and front-end and back-end design.

Not entirely new

Still, making chips is not entirely new for Oppo. Last year, Mariana released MariSilicon X. With that chip for image processing, it combined the Neural Processing Unit, ISP and memory architecture. This allowed for advanced camera functions such as 4K night mode with live preview.

MariSilicon X has been a good test, so now Oppo wants to design even more chips in-house. Unfortunately, it is still unknown exactly what capabilities the chipset has, such as CPU and GPU speed. Now the Chinese brand still uses processors from Qualcomm and MediaTek.

According to the Chinese medium, the company’s cheaper models are up first. That will probably be the first test for the phone maker. If that goes well, it is not inconceivable that later it will be the turn of the more expensive models. For example, Samsung already uses its own Exynos chipset in some devices in the Galaxy S line and Apple has its own A-series in its iPhones.
