Samsung makes cheaper Android smartphone a lot more interesting

The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is getting a feature that is a gamechanger for cheaper Android smartphones.

When it comes to smartphones, people mainly look at the brands’ flagships. We know all about the iPhone 16 or Samsung Galaxy S24, but the cheaper Android models sometimes get a little out of the picture.

Yet now Samsung gives a reason to take a close look at them anyway, because the Galaxy A16 is rumored to get five years of OS updates. That’s a real gamechanger and, in doing so, it puts a lot of pressure on other Android makers.

Samsung wants to update cheaper Android smartphones longer

One of the reasons for choosing the Samsung Galaxy S24, Google Pixel 9 or iPhone 16, for example, is that you can do years with those smartphones compared to a cheaper smartphone. This includes not only the hardware in the devices, but also the software. You get at least five years of Android or iOS updates.

With cheaper Android smartphones, that number is much lower. If you’re lucky, your smartphone will get updates for three years, and even only two years for some models. Yet Samsung seems to be moving away from that if The Tech Outlook is to be believed. They have received slides from a reliable source about the Samsung Galaxy A16.

Those slides show something special. The Samsung Galaxy A16 would receive six years of OS and security updates. That would mean getting five Android updates. Something currently unthinkable with cheaper smartphones. It is one of the reasons why people have to switch cheap smartphones regularly.

Until now, Samsung Galaxy A models have already received four Android updates and five years of security updates, but six is thus a big increase. Especially when you put that next to other budget models from other brands.

This is the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G

Outside of software updates, the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G promises even more. For example, according to the source, the device would get a 6.7-inch 90Hz display and an Exynos 1330 or Dimensity 6100 chip under the hood. You would also be able to choose between 4, 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage.

The smartphone should appear in light green, blue-black and gold colors. The price is not yet known, but its predecessor, the Galaxy A15 5G, had a price of 229 euros at launch. Presumably, the Galaxy A16 will be around the same price. It should make its first appearance in India next month. When the Netherlands will follow is still unknown.
