Huawei is releasing an impressive smartphone in China. But the price for replacing a broken screen is also imposing and even more than an iPhone 16.
While we can already buy several folding phones in Europe, Huawei is taking it a step further in China. Huawei has developed a smartphone that you can fold twice.
To do so, Huawei has developed an impressive screen with two folds in it. That screen is so special that it comes with a huge price tag. You pay an amount for which you can also get the iPhone 16 in your home.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design’s screen is more expensive than an iPhone 16
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design is the brand’s latest flagship. And that it is an ultimate design is evident, as it is the world’s first smartphone with two folds in the screen. This gives you an even larger screen than a normal foldable and folds the smartphone in a kind of Z-shape.
Because the smartphone is also incredibly narrow, it is barely any thicker than a normal smartphone. Because it is such a special phone, you will pay hefty for it, as the price tag is 19,999 yuan, or 2,541 euros.

That’s already a hefty price, which is why you really don’t want to drop your smartphone. If it does happen, then you really have a big problem. Replacing your smartphone’s screen is not cheap, as it will cost you 7,999 yuan, or 1,016 euros. So that’s a higher price than the entry-level iPhone 16.
At least, if you choose to let Huawei recycle your old screen for free. If you don’t, then the price is 9,799 yuan, or 1,245 euros. Fortunately, there is also a cheaper solution. If you opt for a refurbished screen, that is, one that has been recycled, then you will pay “only” 6,999 yuan, or 889 euros.
More expensive than the competition
That’s considerably more than getting the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 repaired. Should you have a crack in that, Samsung will charge you 599 euros for a new screen. Then again, that’s a screen with only one fold. By comparison, on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, screen replacement costs 549 euros, but then again there is no crease in that. With the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it’s still a question mark, since that smartphone doesn’t ship yet.
Fortunately, other parts are cheaper to get repaired on the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design. For example, a battery replacement costs 499 yuan, or 63 euros. The motherboard, on the other hand, is not cheap. For this, you will pay 9,099 yuan, or 1,156 euros. So you would do well to buy a very good case. Both for your screen and for your motherboard. However, you don’t have to worry about it too much, because the smartphone is not for sale in the Netherlands (for now).
