Since the new Android 15 update, it is possible to set a charging limit on your Google Pixel phone. This makes it wear out a little less quickly and your smartphone last longer.

Google Pixel owners can now set their phones not to charge beyond 80 percent. This feature is very useful for people who sometimes leave their phones on the charger for long periods of time (such as an entire night). In fact, excessive charging can shorten your battery life.

The feature is available on all Pixels running Android 15. Smartphones of other brands usually have a similar feature, which you can usually find under the battery settings.

Here’s how to set it up on the Google Pixel

Setting a charge limit is very simple. For it, you open the settings, go to the battery heading and then to optimization. Here you can choose from adaptive charging and charging to 80 percent.

Adaptive charging means that your Pixel charges itself to 100 percent, but does so gradually so that it’s full as soon as you disconnect it. If you choose charging to 80 percent, your smartphone never charges beyond that percentage.

Charging to 80 percent helps your battery last longer than if you charge it all the way to 100 percent. Your phone won’t explode (modern devices are well protected against that). But once your battery loses 1 percent after reaching 100 percent, the charger immediately goes to work replenishing that. And the very act of topping up that last bit causes the most wear and tear. Plus, your phone gets hot while charging, which isn’t exactly conducive to battery life either.

Smart charging is also possible on other smartphones

Smart charging is possible on most smartphones these days. On iPhones, it’s set by default: the phone learns from your charging routines and charges more slowly from 80 percent up. You can also manually set a charging limit on the latest iPhones.

Samsung phones also let you set a charge limit. To do this, you go to the battery settings. There, a slider selects whether the smartphone battery should charge to a maximum of 85 percent. This option is off by default, so the battery charges normally to 100 percent.
