Because of the iPhone 16, we would almost forget that Huawei has announced one of the most innovative Android smartphones in years. But what exactly is it a device?
It had been talked about for weeks, but the ball is in the church. Huawei has announced one of the most insane Android smartphones in years with its Mate XT Ultimate Design.
Fat it is no doubt, but cheap anything but. The device’s starting price is a painful 19,999 Chinese renminbi, a generous 2,500 euros converted. Well, and for that money…
Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design: folding phone on doping
Since 2019, the folding phone has been a household name in smartphone land. After the Samsung Galaxy Fold saw the light of day, countless variants have sprung from the ground. Impressive the devices are certainly, but due to the generally high price tag, real success is still far away.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, with its price tag of over 2,500 euros, will not change that. Still, it can be called a noteworthy Android smartphone because it takes a slightly different approach to the concept of the folding phone.

A double hinge under the screen allows the Android phone to fold on two sides like the letter ‘Z’. The advantage is that the device not only gives you a 6.4-inch display when folded, but more importantly, it gives you a 10.2-inch display when unfolded.
This allows that inner screen to actually be used as a tablet, without losing the functionality and manageability of a regular Android smartphone. In doing so, it is also possible to use a third configuration, that of a 7.9-inch display.
What else does the Android smartphone offer?
Besides that impressive OLED panel, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design has more to offer. For example, it features 16GB of working memory, 512GB or 1TB storage capacity and a 5600 mAh battery.
Given the size of the screen, and its quality, it remains to be seen how long that battery will last with average use. However, Huawei does reveal that fast charging at 66W is possible, and you can also charge it wirelessly at 50W.
On the front of the Android smartphone we find a hole-punch notch with an 8 megapixel selfie camera inside. On the back, we find a triple-camera system with a 50-megapixel main camera, 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 12-megapixel periscope camera.
We asked Huawei if we can expect the Mate XT in the Netherlands, although we don’t hold out much hope.
