The iPhone 14 Pro can make a big difference for people who often spend time outdoors and want to take great photos. In fact, previous models of the Apple smartphone suffered from a screen that wasn’t incredibly bright in sunny weather. But this year’s Pro and Pro Max change that.
In fact, the two smartphones feature more advanced screens. Apple even calls the Super Retina XDR displays on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max “the most advanced screens ever on a smartphone.” That’s still marketing language, of course, but somewhere you might find a kernel of truth in it.

In fact, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max feature a maximum screen brightness of 2,000 nits. That’s twice the number of nits than on previous models. The higher the number of nits, the brighter the screen can be set. And thus the better you can see what you are doing when it is sunny.
When you use HDR mode, for photos or videos, then number plummets a bit. Then the 14 Pro and Pro Max achieve a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits. Still not bad: that puts the new smartphones on a par with the much more expensive Pro Display XDR.
New screen on Pro models
The two new iPhone 14 Pro models feature a new OLED panel and a new Display Engine embedded in the A16 Bionic chip. This allows the screen to offer cool features. Think of that special Dynamic Island (which makes even a notch attractive) and the refresh rate of 120 Hertz.
Apple is also making some smaller changes to the screens. For example, the resolution has slightly improved. The 14 Pro Max has a resolution of 2,796 by 1,290 pixels; the 13 Pro Max has one of 2,778 by 1,284 pixels. The regular Pro has a resolution of 2,556 by 1,179; and the iPhone 13 Pro has one of 2,532 by 1,170 pixels.
