These iPhones, iPads and Macs will (not) get Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence was the main announcement during Apple’s WWDC Keynote. But which iPhones, iPads and Macs will get this feature (and which ones won’t)?

Apple finally announced its AI plans during WWDC24. Only Apple doesn’t call it Artificial Intelligence, it calls it Apple Intelligence. Great marketing, in other words.

But you probably want the feature on your iPhone, iPad or Mac anyway. Unfortunately, quite a few users will be disappointed.

These iPhones will get Apple Intelligence

A lot of iPhone users will be disappointed. Apple Intelligence is only coming to devices with the A17 chip. So these are only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. So if you bought an iPhone 15 last year, you are out of the loop.

Even with an iPhone 14 Pro, you won’t have access to AI. There’s a logical reason behind that. Unlike Android, much of the AI at Apple happens on the device itself. The chip has to be powerful enough to do that. So the A16 may not be.

Which Macs and iPads will get Apple Intelligence?

With the iPad and Macs, there is a bit more room in the lineup. Apple Intelligence is coming to all devices running on an M1 chip. In terms of iPad, that means the fifth-generation Air and newer can expect the AI update. The same goes for the fifth-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch and newer and the third-generation iPad Pro 11-inch and newer.

On the Mac, the M1 chip was first in the 2020 MacBook Air, 2020 Mac mini, 2020 MacBook Pro (13-inch) and the 2021 iMac (24-inch). In newer models with an M2 or M3 chip, the feature obviously works as well.

Dutch is not supported (yet)

The press release about Apple Intelligence only mentions American English as the set default language. So you will have to set the language of the device and Siri to American English to use it.

So whether Dutch will also be supported remains to be seen. It is possible that an update for this will come later. By the way, that doesn’t mean you can’t use other iOS 18 features, for example. Some features do have machine learning, but are not covered by Apple Intelligence.
