Those with an iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s in their homes can download a rare update. Apple last night released a new version of iOS 12 made specifically for smartphones that can no longer run iOS 15.
The update in question is iOS 12.5.6, which you can install on your iPhone immediately. Important, because Apple rolls out such an update for a reason.
Apple drops update for old iPhone models
Although Apple does everything it can to keep iOS as secure as possible, sometimes things go wrong. The American company has discovered a vulnerability in the iPhone that has already been used by hackers. For exactly that reason it released earlier as iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1. Although that was evidently not enough.
The vulnerability is such a danger that Apple is even going back nine years. It’s extremely rare, but the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 (2014) are thus suddenly getting another update in 2022. The update is iOS 12.5.6, which was created specifically for smartphones that can no longer run iOS 15.

In addition to the two iPhone models mentioned, the 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini (second-generation and third-generation) and iPod Touch (sixth-generation) are also capable of installing the update.
What exactly is going on?
The vulnerability is in WebKit. Through this tool, hackers can set up a web page that allows it to run code on an iPhone without the user’s consent.
The extent to which this has caused problems is not clear, but Apple does let it be known that they are aware of the fact that it has already been abused. So in this regard, it is important to install the new update.
Apple also rolled out a new update for older models in the fall of 2021. At the time, it was version 12.5.5 to stop Pegasus spyware.
