A day before Apple unveils its latest iPhones, Huawei presents a special phone. The Huawei Mate 50 (Pro) must ensure that you can also be reached when you have no connection to the mobile network of your provider. You can then always fall back on satellite communication via messages.
Owners of the new Huawei phone can stay in touch with friends and family via the Chinese, yet globally available satellite network BeiDou. They also get access to some navigation features. Granted, the features are not mega extensive, but having access to such a backup is very nice.

That Huawei announces this a day before the Apple event, where we will see the new iPhones, is not surprising. After all, Apple reportedly wants to introduce a similar functionality for the iPhone 14 series. Whether this is true, we will see tonight. From 19:00 hours Dutch time you can watch live.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is otherwise a flagship like we see more often than not. The device features impressive specifications, such as a large 6.74-inch OLED screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. On the back of the phone is a large camera module with a main camera of fifty megapixels.
More use of satellites?
Over the past few months, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding satellite communications and phones in general. For example, T-Mobile and SpaceX, among others, have announced a partnership. The future plan is for T-Mobile subscribers to be able to connect with each other via Starlink satellites.
When such services launch, we should note that they are initially quite limited. Sending each other messages and photos should be just about possible. Other things, such as mobile Internet or telephony, are not yet possible. In addition, a phone often cannot receive these types of messages, but only send them – so you will probably only use it in extreme SOS situations.
