A new feature for Android makes your phone conversation a lot brighter. But what is it and how do you turn it on? WANT editor Dennis Mons tells you all about it!

Believe it or not, in these times of “I’ll app you, sometime, sometime,” there are still actual persons who use a phone as a phone. After all, it’s the fastest way to find out something, or hear the voice of a friend, girlfriend or another loved one for a moment.

Android now sounds crisp

Thanks to the latest update to Android 13 Quarterly Platform Release (QPR1 Beta), your background noise is automatically filtered. The new feature is called Clear Calling; it works, as far as we know thanks to blogger Michael Rahman, on almost all networks.

Rahman has already found the setting manually in his Android phone’s settings. Noting that the feature works only through a call through a telecom provider. His device gave a message that it is not available for calls over Wi-Fi (which many people also do with Whatsapp, for example).

So it also remains to be seen if the feature will possibly become available for phone calls via Whatsapp or even Facebook Messenger, but if it is just a software update in Android, that is certainly not out of the question.

Like Google Meet

The new feature strongly reminds us of an update that Google Meet received. This suppressed sounds such as typing, closing a door, echo, or even nearby handymen.

So Clear Calling can be tried out after the update, but that requires some knowledge of ADB (Android Debug Bridge). ADB allows you to install and debug apps with some ease (and knowledge), AND gives you access to a Unix shell that allows you to use command lines to access hidden functions.

Super quiet?

The question now is whether the feature will be rolled out for everyone. There is also another mystery: how well does this work in conjunction with headphones that already have noise-cancelling anyway. If the two go hand in hand, this could be another revolutionary step when it comes to phone quality.

We will undoubtedly get to work with ADB from the Android SDK Platforms-Tools Package to see just how well Clear Calling works. Because if we like anything, it’s figuring out what features on an Android phone can’t be found right away.

When the Clear Calling feature will be released to the general public is not yet known.
