Xiaomi 12T Pro: 5 reasons to (not) buy the phone

Xiaomi is a relatively small player in the Dutch smartphone market in the Netherlands but wants to change that. It has released the Xiaomi 12T Pro which should compete with the big boys. Will it succeed?

Xiaomi is stomping out stores all over the world with all kinds of products. From computers to electric scooters to televisions to robotic vacuum cleaners and even other beasts. Yet one of the company’s main pillars is phones.

The new Xiaomi 12T Pro

Xiaomi’s two newest models are the 12T and the 12T Pro. They have to compete with other brands including the new Google Pixel 7. We give you five reasons to (not) buy the 799 euro phone

Appearance

Of course Xiaomi wants to offer a top phone at a good price, but it really could have spent a little more money on the materials. The appearance of the 12T Pro looks top notch and looks like a fine business phone. But then again, why plastic was chosen for a snazzy high-end phone is a mystery.

What’s also noticeable is that the device’s screen has Gorilla Glass 5 instead of Victus. Something its predecessor the 11T Pro does have.

Screen

The screen of the Xiaomi 12T Pro is very decent. This is a 6.67-inch AMOLED with 446 ppi. As such, it is great for streaming on the phone. I regularly use the phone for that on the train and it’s just great for that.

The brightness is usually around 500 Nits, but can switch to 900 Nits when needed. So the colors are super sharp and that is noticeable when there is a lot of (daytime) light. With 120 Hz refresh rate, it all looks very smooth too.

Performance

There is little to complain about under the hood as well. The Xiaomi 12T Pro has a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. It’s one of the fastest processors and you can tell. Still, there is one drawback. Sometimes the phone struggles a bit when it needs to perform at full throttle. It can get quite warm at times.

And that’s just what a shame, since Xiaomi revealed during the presentation of the phone that it also looked at the cooling of the device. So there really is room for improvement. However, if you don’t run heavy programs and games on the phone, you won’t notice too much of it.

Battery

There is little to complain about the battery. Inside the Xiaomi 12T Pro is a 5,000 mAh battery. I can easily get through the day with that and even 2 days if I don’t look at the screen too much or have music on.

Should the phone’s battery nevertheless run down, it recharges in no time. Within half an hour, my Xiaomi 12T pro was back from 0% to 100%.

Camera of the Xiaomi 12T Pro

Xiaomi is proudest of the 12T Pro’s camera. It is one of the few phones with a 200 megapixel camera. Still, those megapixels don’t say it all. Sure, it’s a nice feature, but you’re not really going to use it much. If only because photos and videos take up a lot of space.

It does have another cool feature because of all that sharpness. There is a special program that allows you to easily crop and crop photos. That way it’s even possible to get two or three different ones out of a good photo.

Nevertheless, if you compare the Xiaomi 12T Pro’s photos with other devices, the end result is a bit disappointing. I myself often use my iPhone 13 which still takes much better quality snapshots despite far fewer megapixels. We also recently held in our hands a Google Pixel 7 Pro, which delivers better quality anyway.

Nevertheless, it does not mean that photos are really bad, but it could have been just a little bit better. Especially when in terms of marketing, you focus all your arrows on taking photos with the device.
