AirPods competitor Nothing Ear (2) a reality, but what’s new?

Nothing, the company of OnePlus founder Carl Pei, today announced the successor to its popular Ear (1) earbuds. Armed with the Nothing Ear (2) name and the same design, we seem to be dealing with a more expensive copy. But is that really the case?

Of course not. Nothing has spent the past two years working hard on the successor to, arguably, the most talked about earbuds of 2021. While not every consumer will immediately notice the difference, it is there.

Nothing Ear (2): the difference from the Ear (1)

At first glance, the Nothing Ear (1) and Nothing Ear (2) do not differ at all. The company has chosen to use the same design. It doesn’t need to, because founder Carl Pei’s earbuds are unique and stylish enough.

So the difference is mainly in the functionalities of the earbuds. For example, the Nothing Ear (2) features a feature called Bluetooth multipoint. This technology allows you to connect the earbuds to two devices at the same time.

At the same time, noise cancellation has also improved. Three levels of noise cancellation should be able to completely isolate you from the outside world. Noise with up to 40dB is thus completely drawn into silence.

Battery life is 36 hours and sound quality is improved. This time, the Nothing Ear (2) offers Hi-Res Audio of up to 24bit at 192KHz. Simply put, the Freakin’ Nerds podcast clacks through your skull even more nicely.

A hype never to be forgotten

The move may not seem very big on paper, but to be honest, it doesn’t have to be. The Nothing Ear (1) brought with it hype in 2021 that I hadn’t seen in years. And that hype turned out to be justified.

Despite costing only 99 euros, the earbuds really managed to surprise us at the time. The see-through design was to our liking, the noise cancellation was excellent and the sound quality fine. Something I really go for in this price range.

Recently, Nothing released the Ear Stick, which unlike the first earbuds was a lesser success. Just like that Phone (1), for that matter. But the fact that the company is anything but a one hit wonder shows nicely with the arrival of the Nothing Ear (2). At least, on paper.
