Amazon wants delivery drivers to start wearing Smart Glasses in the car

Amazon delivery drivers sometimes have a bad day too, and that’s when some extra support is no luxury. These Smart Glasses can really come in handy then.

Amazon is reportedly developing smart AR glasses for its delivery drivers. So reports Reuters based on anonymous sources. The idea behind these Smart Glasses is simple: by giving delivery drivers augmented reality (AR) glasses, the company hopes to save time per delivery.

Those time savings would ultimately help deliver more packages per trip. The glasses would be an upgrade from Amazon’s Echo Frames and are going to be codenamed “Amelia,” according to insiders.

This is what Amazon’s new Smart Glasses can do

According to sources, the AR glasses could be quite handy for delivery drivers. The glasses would have a display to help you navigate through unfamiliar buildings, and it would also provide navigation while driving, eliminating the need for a separate GPS.

This would help Amazon employees work faster and more efficiently, and perhaps even make multiple deliveries at once. Many delivery workers would probably agree that the biggest time wasted comes from getting lost in large buildings, so such glasses that tell you exactly where to go do sound pretty practical.

The idea sounds good, but there are still some problems. For example, the glasses must have a battery that will last an entire working day, and collecting the right data about buildings and neighborhoods is not easily done either. And let’s face it, technology in many cases doesn’t work as well as we hope.

According to sources, there’s even a chance that the project could be scrapped altogether if it doesn’t do what it promises or if it’s too expensive to make. Of course, the glasses must not only work well, but also remain affordable. So it could well be that Amazon decides to shelve the idea for now and see if it is still a good plan later.

Will it be a flop?

By the way, Amazon already has some experience with Smart Glasses, but it has not been particularly successful. The Echo Frames, an earlier attempt to market smart glasses, have turned out to be quite a flop. Amazon sold only 10,000 units of the third-generation Echo Frames since its launch last year. This raises the question of whether the new AR glasses will really make the impact Amazon hopes.

Whether the AR glasses will eventually be rolled out for Amazon delivery drivers remains to be seen. The company has revealed that it is “continuously innovating to create a safer and better delivery experience for drivers,” but would not provide details on this project.

Given the sales of the Echo Frames and the challenges surrounding the new glasses, it remains to be seen if these smart glasses will get off the ground. Until then, delivery drivers will just have to keep using their navigation apps on their phones.
