Disney+ goes after Netflix with unpopular measures

Netflix managed to anger users by restricting account sharing. It also raised the price of the service. Disney+ has indicated it will follow in Netflix’s footsteps.

The golden days of streaming services seem to be coming to an end. More and more providers are raising prices and no longer allowing you to share an account with friends or family. And Disney+ is also going along with this.

Disney+ gets substantially more expensive

At its quarterly meeting, Disney signaled to offer new subscriptions worldwide and increase the price of existing ones. It is launching a cheaper variant in Europe on November 1, for example, but it will have advertisements.

In the U.S., Disney is going to offer a bundle of Disney+ Premium and Hulu for $19.99 a month. If you also want ESPN+ with that, the total is $24.99. The subscription with commercials there is going to cost $7.99.

In the Netherlands we don’t have Hulu. Instead, in addition to Disney+, we have Star, among other things. How much we will pay for Premium is not yet known. Currently, we pay 9.99 euros for a Premium subscription. For that you get 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, Full HD, HDR10 and Expanded Aspect Ratio with IMAX Enhanced, if supported.

Declining numbers of subscribers

The decision to raise prices is striking. Domestic subscribers in the United States and Canada have dropped from 46.3 million to 46.0 million over the past three months.

Interestingly, the biggest drop in the number of Disney+ subscribers occurred in India, where Disney+Hotstar dropped from 52.9 million paying users to 40.4 million paying users. This was mainly due to the company’s loss of digital broadcast rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament.

The company also wants to combat account sharing. During the announcement, CEO Bob Iger indicated that it will address password sharing. Exactly how Disney will do that is not clear. However, new terms and conditions will be launched at the end of the year. That will probably also be when the new prices are introduced in Europe.
