Google has announced some new features for Google Maps. You can expect these on your iPhone or Android device.
Google Maps is the world’s most popular navigation app. Every month, some 2 billion people use the maps to find their way, and every day Google makes 100 million updates to the map, partly through the use of AI.
AI has already allowed Google to add features such as fuel-efficient routes and Immersive View. Now more new AI features are being added.
More Gemini in Google Maps
You can now ask Google Maps for inspiration for activities. For example, if a friend comes to visit, you can ask the app what you can do in the evening. Then Gemini in Google Maps gives you ideas. For example, it shows where there is live music or suggests a brewery to have a beer.
In addition, Gemini also summarizes the reviews others have left, so you can be sure you’re making a good choice. You can also ask specific questions, such as whether there are outdoor seating areas or whether there is a quiet atmosphere. The app pulls this information from existing reviews.

Gemini also helps you with planned routes in Google Maps. If you want to add a stopover, Gemini comes up with recommendations for nearby sights, attractions and restaurants.
Safer driving
Another new update makes driving safer. Roads can be confusing with multiple lanes, but Google Maps now helps choose, as lanes, pedestrian crossings and traffic signs are also more clearly visible on the map. In addition, the app tells you exactly which lane to choose. All you have to do is follow the new blue line in the lane markings.
On the road, the app also shows road conditions better. It is now possible to see and report flooded, unpaved and low visibility roads.
Arrival guidance
Have you arrived at your destination? If so, Google Maps offers arrival guidance. The app illuminates your building and shows the entrance and nearby parking lots. When you park, Google Maps reminds you to save the parking space so you don’t get lost.
Not all Google Maps features coming to the Netherlands right away
Weather and arrival guidance features will be rolled out globally starting this week. Improved navigation with lane selection will only be available in 30 metropolitan areas. Exactly which ones those are is not yet known, but Google plans to expand the feature gradually.
The Gemini feature will initially be launched only in the United States, but it is likely that Europe will not be long in coming.
