You soon won’t be able to share your HBO Max subscription. The streaming service is following Netflix and Disney+ in doing so.
Sharing your subscription is an issue for many streaming services. While it can be beneficial for you, for the companies it means lost revenue, and they want to recoup that. Netflix was the first to take action against account sharing, then Disney+ followed, and now it’s HBO Max’s turn.
This means it will soon no longer be possible to share your password – and thus your subscription – with others. We tell you what to expect and when.
Like Netflix, HBO Max is imposing password sharing restrictions
HBO Max is taking a slightly different approach than Netflix. Whereas Netflix acted quite strictly by immediately making password sharing impossible, the streaming service says it is taking a milder approach.
During a presentation of quarterly results, Gunnar Wiedenfels, CFO of Warner Bros. Discovery, announced that the “soft” measures are just the beginning. The streaming service plans to ask “users who have not self-subscribed, or members with multiple households” to pay a little extra.

Exactly how HBO Max plans to implement this more lenient approach remains unclear. Most likely, like Netflix, they will charge extra for users who are not in the same household.
More subscriptions and possible price increases
There is also a chance that HBO Max will raise prices further next year. Wiedenfels emphasized the “premium quality” of the service and suggested that this leaves room for a price increase. At the same time, he called the current rates “sensible.
However, it would be remarkable if the streaming service raises prices again soon, since the last adjustment occurred “only” in June. That’s when HBO Max introduced three different subscriptions: Basic with advertising, Standard, and Premium. Something similar to Netflix.
The cheapest subscription costs 5.99 euros, while the most expensive subscription is 13.99 euros per month. You can read more about it in the article below.
