Heres how to best protect your privacy on your iPhone

Here’s how to best protect your privacy on your iPhone according to Apple

It’s Privacy Day and a good time to reflect on your own security. Apple gives you some tips for the iPhone.

Perhaps, like me, you sometimes forget to think about your online privacy. Especially with your iPhone or Android device, you share more data than you think.

On Privacy Day (Jan. 28), it’s good to take a moment to think about this. Apple offers several tips, and we go over the most important ones with you.

Here’s how to protect yourself

First, you can control what you share with app makers on your iPhone. You can share photos, locations and contacts with an app, but it asks permission first. Don’t just hit accept, read carefully what exactly the app asks. For example, is it really necessary to share your location with Facebook?

Have you already given permission? Then fortunately you can always change this in the settings. Go to Settings and select the relevant app. There you can set what you do and do not want to share. In addition, in Settings > Privacy and Security you can see exactly which apps have access to which features. In Location, you can even share an estimated location instead of your exact location.

Security measures in Safari

There are also several options in Safari for iPhone that protect your privacy. For example, private windows are automatically locked and you can open them with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. In addition, your search data is not saved in this mode.

You can also protect yourself from trackers. These include cookies from websites that follow you to gather more information about you. Advertisers use this data to show you more targeted advertising. Apps must ask explicit permission for this. You can adjust this through Settings > Privacy and Security and then select Tracking.

Hide your email address

Apple offers the ability to hide your email address through iCloud. This does require a paid subscription to the service. When you sign up somewhere, Apple can generate an alternate email address that is linked to your regular address. That way a company never knows your real email address, and hackers don’t have a chance.

In addition, iCloud has another handy feature: Private Transfer. This ensures that no one can see who you are and what websites you visit when you use Safari. Even Apple has no insight into this data. You can compare this to a VPN.
