More people than expected visited fake web store police

A fake police web store has attracted far more visitors than expected. The site explains how to spot scams.

You can get scammed over the Internet in many different ways. For example, you can fall for a phishing email, which criminals use to steal your data. But there are also many rogue web stores in circulation that pretend to be a real shop, but actually want to cheat you out of money.

The police report that 45,000 cases of Internet scams were reported last year. 20,000 of those cases involved Web store fraud. “It really is a big problem,” says Gijs van der Linden, team leader of The National Internet Scam Reporting Point (LMIO).

Fake police web store ‘big success’

The police themselves have also launched a fake Web store to draw attention to the problem. That site has already reached 125,000 people since the end of last year. “It is nice that we have reached so many people. On the other hand, it worries us,” says Van der Linden. “The high number of visitors indicates that a large group of people are susceptible to this kind of fraud. It is striking that the largest group of visitors are people over 55.”

On the website, pakjedealsnu.nl, you can buy various tech products. These include, for example, iPhones that are a lot cheaper than at real webshops. If you click on a product, you come to a page that makes it clear that the website is from the police. Then there is an explanation of how to recognize a fake web store.

You could have seen that the site is fake

People could also have found out for themselves that the site is fake, for example, by checking the Chamber of Commerce number displayed. After all, that number belongs to the police. The police had not counted on the large number of visitors, and assumed that the site would attract some 30,000 visitors.

The campaign for which the police created the site is over. Nevertheless, the site remains online. It is still being considered how the site can continue to be used to reach consumers.
