The VLC Media Player now subtitles everything for you with AI

Nothing more annoying than a video you don’t understand anything about because you don’t know the spoken language. That should soon be a thing of the past.

VLC is a computer program you can use to play any video file imaginable. Most file formats are supported. In addition, you can use the free computer program to play DVDs and CDs.

From now on, you can also use the program with video that is not in your native language. With AI, VLC will automatically generate subtitles for you. That way, you no longer have to download separate files with subtitles.

No internet required for subtitles by VLC

VLC’s program uses an open source AI model that does not need the Internet to work. In fact, it runs locally on your computer, allowing you to use it offline as well. According to VideoLAN, the organization behind VLC, the feature is going to support several languages. It is not clear if that includes Dutch.

In general, artificial intelligence is good at translating. You notice that when you use ChatGPT or Gemini, for example, to transfer a text from one language to another. For people who are translators by profession, this is less nice, because their work could be at risk.

Not known when feature will come to the Netherlands

VideoLAN presented VLC’s new feature at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. That largest tech fair in the world is taking place this week. Numerous tech companies are presenting all kinds of novelties there. So far, for example, we saw that Samsung TVs are getting AI, and that a new device that resembles a toaster means you never have to charge your phone again.

It is not known when the new features will come to the VLC player. VideoLAN has not yet put out a press release online with more information. Until then, we will have to keep our fingers crossed that you will be able to use it in Dutch.
