This Chinese AI chatbot is downloaded more often than ChatGPT

ChatGPT is by far the most well-known AI chatbot out there. But a Chinese chatbot called DeepSeek is currently being downloaded more often.

AI chatbots are popping up like mushrooms. You now have Gemini from Google, ChatGPT from OpenAI and Meta AI, the chatbot from Facebook’s parent company. All can do pretty much the same thing. Yet small differences between them mean that the ai chatbots all have their own advantages over the competition.

One new chatbot is DeepSeek, created by a Chinese company of the same name. That chatbot is gaining considerable popularity and is currently the most downloaded app in the U.S. App Store. The app is currently installed by more people than ChatGPT. The same is true in the Netherlands: in our country, DeepSeek is in second place, and ChatGPT in fourth.

Chinese AI chatbot does as well as competition

Several media outlets write based on their own experiences that DeepSeek is not underperforming other, mostly American AI chatbots. Especially since DeepSeek released AI model R1, the chatbot has been able to keep up well with the rest.

Like other chatbots, DeepSeek provides answers to any question you can imagine, but, for example, like chatbot Perplexity, it can also search the Web. It is also possible to search documents with DeepSeek, which can also be done with ChatGPT. Moreover, almost all of DeepSeek’s functionalities are free to use, which is not the case with many other AI providers.

DeepSeek cost relatively little money to make

There are concerns about artificial intelligence from China, particularly in the United States. That is why, for example, chipmaker NVIDIA is no longer allowed to supply certain technology in the country. That seems to have little effect in the case of DeepSeek. Indeed, the company says it could create the chatbot’s AI model using older NVIDIA hardware.

Moreover, the development of the R1 AI model would have cost much less money than, say, the development of ChatGPT’s latest model. The GPT-5 model cost $500 million to develop. DeepSeek would have needed only about $6 million to develop the chatbot.
