This could be the first laptop with a roll-up screen

A roll-up screen could be useful for turning a small device into one with a large screen. Lenovo is reportedly working on the first laptop with such a screen.

Phones with foldable screens have been on the market for years now, from the likes of Samsung and Google. Work has been going on behind the scenes for years on revolutionary techniques to make screens in even laptops, for example, more flexible, which helps make devices more manageable.

According to a leaker, Lenovo plans to announce the first laptop with a roll-up screen at tech trade show CES. It would be the sixth variant of the ThinkBook Plus. The device’s screen does not roll out to the left or right, but upward. This creates an elongated screen on which you can open many windows or other content.

Laptop has not yet been presented by Lenovo

Evan Blass shares images of the new laptop in a post. The device, which has not yet been presented by Lenovo itself, does feature the company’s logo. On display is a device that at first glance appears normal, until you “roll open” the image upward. Then a large screen emerges, of which he also posted a picture.

At next year’s tech trade show CES, scheduled for early January, manufacturers often unveil new products. The new laptop may be announced there. How Blass got the images is not clear.

Roll-up screen may be useful for several reasons

A laptop with a screen as large as the possibly new Lenovo ThinkBook Plus can be very handy for several purposes. When you want to write long texts and have a good overview, for example. Or when you use your laptop to write code.

You can also think of other applications for which a roll-up screen is useful. For example, you can easily place two windows of, say, your browser below each other. And it might also make it less necessary to connect a second monitor to your computer if you want to do many different things at once.

We probably don’t have to count on the laptop going cheap. In general, devices with special screens are on the expensive side. So are we with foldable phones, which are often much more expensive than alternatives with normal screens. But should price not matter much to you, you might be able to pick up a really fat laptop starting next year.
