This electric bike of the future no longer needs a chain

Normally, an electric bike comes with a chain. But actually it doesn’t have to. Two companies have teamed up to develop an e-bike that can easily do without one.

The concept e-bike, called Rover 45, is an interesting collaboration between Look Bicycles and Cixi. Cixi, a company based in France, has found a new way to power electric bikes.

And you no longer need a chain for that at all. We’ll explain exactly how.

This electric bike generates its own energy

The Rover 45 is an impressive electric bike, with a maximum speed of 45 km/h, thanks to a 700 Wh battery. But what makes this bike really special is the PERS technology, or Pedaling Energy Recovery System. It is an innovative system that recovers energy while pedaling. This means you can cycle even more efficiently and increase your range.

The PERS system on the electric bike works in a clever way. When you pedal, your pedaling power is used against resistance, making it feel like normal pedaling. At the same time, the battery is charged with the energy you generate. This energy is then transferred to the rear hub motor, which propels the bike based on your pedaling speed.

Handy anyway! (Image: Look/Cixi)

The system also features regenerative braking at the rear, further replenishing the battery. It’s a great way to save energy and enhance your cycling experience.

No chain

The electric bicycle has no chain, as you would normally expect. The PERS system uses a unique continuously variable “transmission” system. This system adapts to different speeds and takes into account your own preferences. As a result, you experience seamless adjustment while pedaling.

For now, we will have to make do with a chain on our electric bikes for a while. Cixi and Look will release their first production models during 2024. When we can expect the smart electric bike is not yet known.

In addition to the PERS system, Cixi is also working on a micro-car called Vigoz. This car is powered by pedals and can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. The company hopes to have the first models on the road by 2027.
