WhatsApp is constantly developing new features. You can video call for some time, of course, but emojis should soon start adding an extra dimension to your video calls.
Video calling has become increasingly popular in recent years. For some people, it’s even more normal than “regular” calling. But apart from seeing each other, you can add pretty little extra during your video calls on WhatsApp. The chat service may be about to change that.
When you send messages via WhatsApp, you can dress up conversations nicely or give them more context by using emojis. An early beta version of WhatsApp shows that the chat service is working to enable sending emojis during video calls .
WhatsApp and Emojis
Not all emojis available on WhatsApp will be added. For now, it is possible to share five emoji responses. A thumbs up, a heart, two flat hands pressed together, a jeer with tears and an emoji with two crosses in its eyes. WhatsApp has been working for some time to make the app more personal. Recently, background themes were rolled out widely.
That you will soon be able to add emojis during video calls on WhatsApp is witty, of course, but the feature is not entirely original. Facetime, for example, has already allowed you to add various emojis and 3D animations for a while, and a similar feature is already available on Signal, Google Meet and Zoom. So it’s safe to say that WhatsApp is pretty late to the party.

In addition to WhatsApp planning to add emoji responses to the app, the chat service is also coming up with a handy feature for when you are in a video call with multiple people. Same as with Teams or with Facetime, it should become possible to raise your hand during the conversation.
If you press this feature then the moderator gets a signal that you want to say something. Sort of the same principle as it used to be in elementary school. This function is also not entirely new, but it is certainly useful if you are in a group chat with several people.
When can we expect this?
With WhatsApp, it’s always a little mystery when something will be rolled out and who can use the feature first. For example, some features are rolled out for both Android and iOS at the same time. But it can also happen that Android users are presented with a feature first and Apple users have to wait a year for the same feature. We saw this happen recently with the feature of being able to use multiple WhatsApp accounts at the same time.
When both features will see the light of day is unclear for now. The features are currently still in their infancy. But with WhatsApp, you never know and it could be that one of the two features will be rolled out in as little as two months. We’ll wait and see.
