WhatsApp users can finally respond to messages with Emoji

WhatsApp is finally rolling out a functionality today that we’ve been talking about a lot lately. Starting with the new update, it is possible to respond to messages with Emoji.

By the way, the new update is not yet available for all users to download. Currently, the functionality is available to participants of the Android Beta version of WhatsApp. Although that’s not as bad news as you might think.

WhatsApp is going to bet more on Emoji

For years Emoji have been indispensable on WhatsApp. Through them, it is possible to quickly respond, without saying a word, to the messages of others. This was previously possible by sending an emoji in a conversation. Thanks to the new functionality, however, it is possible to go a step further.

WhatsApp allows users to attach an emoji to a message. So when someone sends something funny you can respond to it. This is then not sent as a separate message in the conversation, but can be found at the bottom of the original message.

For beta testers with Android only

At the time of writing, the feature has just been rolled out for beta testers with Android. The feature in question is version 2.22.8.3 of the WhatsApp beta. According to a participant, testers will currently have access to six different Emoji, which can be used to respond to messages.

The characters in question are the following:

👍🏻 Thumbs up
❤ Love
😂 Laugh
😮 Surprised
😢 Sad
🙏 Thanks

There had long been talk of such a feature, but until now we had seen little of it. It is, of course, a pity that not every user is provided with it yet, although there is a good chance that you will slowly but surely start to see the Emoji in the wild more often. So don’t be surprised if you get a reaction from someone soon.

Given that the functionality is now in beta, we can cautiously assume that the feature will be rolled out to the general public. It is expected that we will not have to wait very long, although an official release date has not yet been announced.

WhatsApp is making strides in 2022

It’s certainly not the first time in 2022 that we’re talking about a new WhatsApp feature. One would almost think that, after last year, the company has something to catch up on. It has recently become possible to listen to voice messages before sending them, secure backups and create stickers on your desktop.
