WhatsApp will soon not work on two old iPhone models. Are you still using those smartphones? Then you should look for alternatives. It happens more often that the messaging service discontinues support for certain smartphones. Sooner or later it will be the turn of all the old models. Who will be the loser?
The editors of WABetaInfo report that people with an iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C will no longer have access to WhatsApp in a few months. The website bases this on information from a recent beta of the chat app. The site has a pretty good track record when it comes to providing information.
WhatsApp on your old iPhone
So we have no reason to doubt the news. After all, the information comes directly from WhatsApp. So while it is bad news that owners of this iPhone will soon have to do without, there is a golden edge. In fact, it will be some time before that happens, according to the same data.
As it stands, WhatsApp is ending support for iOS 10 and 11 on October 24. Since the iPhone 5 and 5C cannot download iOS 12, owners of these phones will miss out. You now have until the end of October to avoid doing so.
Developments must not stand still
The news gets extra weight when we look at WhatsApp’s official website. There, in fact, we find a page stating that the service works best with iOS 12, and thus the iPhone 5S. So at least the language on the website seems to prepare users for the upcoming changes.
While it is of course annoying when support for certain systems is ended, it is not strange. After all, the app is in constant development. And certain updates simply do not work (well) on older devices and operating systems.
