LG has plans to bring ads to your older OLED TV. Fortunately, you can avoid that with this tip.
LG seems to be diligently looking for ways to make even more money. Not by selling more smart TVs, but by earning from old OLED TVs that the brand has already sold.
Indeed, it is in the process of making it possible to show advertisements on those old televisions. Fortunately, there is a way to prevent that.
LG brings unsolicited advertising to your OLED smart TV
You can hardly avoid advertising on your smart TV. If you watch regular cable television, you already get quite a few commercial breaks between programs. Now more and more streaming services are also showing advertising between your favorite series, such as Disney+ and HBO Max, and starting in 2025, Amazon Prime Video.
As if that weren’t enough, the maker of your smart TV itself is also thinking of a way to show you even more ads. In fact, LG wants to show ads even when your smart TV’s screensaver is on. That way it can make extra money in addition to selling your television.
So this is what it can look like. (Image: Reddit/DMHOOK)
According to Flatpanels HD, the ads are coming to the GX, B1 and B2 OLED, but they may soon be coming to more recent models, such as the C4. The irritating thing is that LG activates this feature on your smart TV unsolicited, but fortunately you can prevent it.
Here’s how to prevent
For this you have to work in the settings yourself, because LG does not explain this. Go to Settings > Additional Settings. There you will see the Screensaver promotion box. Uncheck that box so it won’t bother you.
The ads you see could be anything. For example, it could be a promotion from an LG service such as Channels, or from third-party advertisements on your smart TV.
LG’s move is not entirely unexpected, as there are already more parties doing something like this. For example, you can also see ads through Amazon Fire TV or on Google TV. Then again, you probably didn’t pay more than 1,000 euros for those devices.
Fortunately, the feature can be turned off for now. Hopefully this will remain the case in the future, because few people are waiting for unsolicited advertising. Nevertheless, you still want an LG TV, because they are obviously very good. The top model is now on sale and you can read more about it below.
