The high word seems to be out: the story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will continue this year. Officially, the name of the game has not yet been announced, but Activision is cautiously announcing that it is breaking a long-standing tradition.
Rumors surrounding such a set-up have been going around for more than a year, but officially it was not yet official. That now seems to be changing. Although Modern Warfare II’s story was quite a delight again, however, we can’t help but be a little disappointed.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II moves on
Before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was released last year, the first rumors surrounding this year’s game were already emerging. For example, Activision was reportedly not planning to release a completely new game. The intention was to expand Modern Warfare II considerably, but the publisher is now backtracking on that.
A while ago it already let investors know it was coming out with a new game, and that game seems to be a direct sequel to Modern Warfare II. Whether the game will actually be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is not yet known.
However, it does seem that journalists like Jason Schreier were right. On Twitter recently, the Call of Duty account circulated a poll on whether players would like to bring their current weapons and operators with them to the new game.
Should there actually be a whole new game, this would not be possible given a different zeitgeist. A slight confirmation, then.

Years of tradition broken
So it had been in the air for over a year, but it’s still a bit of a gulp that Activision is ending a tradition. Usually stories of games only continued after a few years.
For example, the remake of the original Modern Warfare appeared in 2019 and gamers didn’t get the game Modern Warfare II until 2022. In the meantime, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020) and Vanguard (2021) appeared.
Especially the alternation between the Modern Warfare series and the Black Ops series is one that fans could really appreciate. At least we at the editors did.
So it’s pretty striking to see Activision draw a line through that.
Call of Duty x The Boys
Striking, however, is the perfect word to describe Call of Duty’s status. With its extreme focus on the Battle Royale mode Warzone, Activision seems to be getting further and further away from the franchise’s identity.
For example, it recently revealed another collaboration with The Boys. So characters from the popular Amazon Prime Video series are playable in the game. In other words, the first-person shooter suddenly has superheroes.
