What Apple isn’t telling you about USB-C on your iPhone 15

The iPhone 15 is the first phone to get a USB-C port. So Apple proudly announced it at its special event. Yet the company doesn’t tell you all about it.

The iPhone 15 models are available for pre-order now, and they will actually ship starting September 22. One of the most notable novelties is the USB-C port that Apple added under pressure from the European Union. The body wants all (small) gadgets to be able to charge via the same way because of environmental concerns.

Apple then announced the USB-C port for the iPhone 15 models during Apple Wonderlust. The company then explained several features of the new feature. With a USB-C cable, it is now possible to charge, transfer data and transfer audio and video from one device to another.

During the presentation, Apple showed that by using the USB-C port in your iPhone, you can charge the AirPods Pro 2 and Apple Watch. For the iPhone 15 Pro, the features go even further. There is a special USB-C controller in the A17 Pro chip. It supports USB 3 resulting in transfer speeds of 10 GB per second. That’s up to 20 times faster than USB 2, according to Apple.

This isn’t what Apple is telling you

OK, that’s all Apple does tell you. However, there are also things the company hasn’t mentioned regarding USB-C in the iPhone. For example, faster charging is not in it. USB-C in this form gives the ability to charge at 35 watts, but apple is sticking to the 20 watts, the same speed as the old Lightning connector.

In addition, the USB-C cable in the iPhone 15 Pro’s box supports USB-C 2 and not the USB-C 3 that Apple mentions in the presentation. You need a special cable for that.

A cable Thunderbolt 4 cable from USB-C to USB-c will currently cost you $79 from Apple. Quite an amount for a cable. And that won’t even let you charge your iPhone 15 faster.
