This is what we expect from the successor to the Nintendo Switch
OK, so a new Nintendo console seems to be coming, but what exactly can we expect? Fortunately, some things have already been leaked here and there.
#1 The new Nintendo Switch is coming in 2024
It really seems to be coming: the successor to the Nintendo Switch. If rumors are to be believed, it will be here in 2024. A leaker who posted a message about it was summoned to take it offline. Now another source confirms to VGC the news.
Developers are reportedly already holding a special development kit for the successor to the Nintendo Switch. So that means a release no longer seems so far away.
If all goes well, the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be released in the second half of 2024. The company chose this time in order to have enough stock. In recent years, we saw that new consoles such as the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 were very difficult to get due to much more demand than supply.
#2 4K image
One of the main improvements of a new Nintendo Switch is a chip. This one is probably going to ensure that we finally get 4K image on the television when connected to the console. OK, that’s still less than the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, which offer 8K, but it’s an update that is needed.
What was 4K again?
4K refers to a resolution of about 4000 pixels horizontally, resulting in a sharper and more detailed image than lower resolutions such as Full HD.
#3 Longer battery life
Let’s face it, the battery life of the Nintendo Switch is not the you’ve got it. Especially if you compare it to tablets or the Steam Deck, for example, there really is still a lot to be gained there for Nintendo. It is therefore expected that the Japanese are working very hard on this.
#4 A disaster for old games
It was previously leaked that Nintendo is having trouble playing older games on the new console, so-called backwards compatibility. Something you don’t really want, of course, because Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey you also just want to keep playing on your new console.
Nintendo itself wants you to be able to just play Switch games on the new console. Yet game developers are worried about this. It would negatively affect sales of new games.
#5 Cloud gaming
Last month, the UK Competition and Markets Authority inadvertently leaked information about the successor to the Nintendo Switch. This one was going to support cloud gaming, which you may know from Xbox Game Pass.
So this will make it possible to play retro games on your Nintendo Switch 2. Earlier news came out that Nintendo and Microsoft are going to work more together. So will there be Xbox Game Pass on the Nintendo console? It doesn’t seem likely, but gee, what a great thing that would be.
These are all rumors, so most of all, take it with a grain of salt. Still, we can’t wait for a new Nintendo Switch.
#6 Hybrid again
One of the biggest success factors of the Nintendo Switch, is that it is a hybrid console. You easily take it anywhere by sliding the joycons onto the screen.
Nintendo would be crazy not to do this for a successor. So probably this will work the same way again with a dock.
#7 No OLED
This is perhaps the most notable item on the list. According to sources to VGC, the successor to the Nintendo Switch will not have an OLED. This while the last version of the game console did have one.
This has everything to do with affordability. Nintendo wants to keep the price of the console from getting too high so that more people will want to buy it. OLED, of course, is more expensive than LCD. The company can always choose to release an OLED version after that, just as it did with the Switch.
#8 More storage
The fact that the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be a bit more expensive has everything to do with storage. Nintendo wants to bring bigger games to the consoles.
Nintendo Switch games now require a maximum of 32 GB, while many Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 games go over 100 GB.
