The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are the best folding smartphones on the market. Yet they still can’t fix the smartphone’s big problem.
The Flip5 and Fold5 were announced in Seoul last week. WANT editor-in-chief Mark Hofman not only had the pleasure of being there, but also of trying the devices for two weeks already. Is he excited or is it all a bit disappointing?
Samsung went all-in for the future
By 2019, we had all kind of figured out exactly what the smartphone was. Each model was practically a big rectangle with the leackiest features humanity could dream up.
Year by year, the steps got smaller and smaller. The camera system got just a little better, the display got just a little better and the battery lasted just a little longer. Not very exciting, if you ask me.
So Samsung did manage to really hit the high ground in 2019 when it came out with the foldable smartphone. The concept, if we forget about that first Galaxy Fold for a moment, had quite a lot of potential. Certainly after the Fold3, the device was, in my opinion, prototype-ready and building for the future could begin.
But in 2023, I find out that Samsung forgot that somewhere along the way.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5: the problem stays alive
Two years later, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 are two impressive smartphones that run into the same problem. As good as they may be: it’s just not very exciting anymore.
That has nothing to do with the quality of either device. On the contrary. Both the Flip5 and the Fold5 are among the best foldable smartphones the market can offer us right now. Certainly the Flip5 can become a device that, thanks in part to its larger display, can really ensure success.
But the steps are too small, the price is too high. Maybe a bit short, but I lovingly explain it to you in the video below:
