Why one of your AirPods always runs out sooner than the other

Apple’s AirPods are one of the most popular wireless earbuds on the market. They provide a seamless connection to all your Apple devices. Yet they also have an annoying drawback.

If you own a pair of AirPods yourself, you probably know the problem. One of the two earbuds drains faster, so after a while you can only listen to music with one earbud. Terribly irritating.

And also a bit strange, since the competitors seem to have this problem less. So where does this problem come from? And can you solve it again? We explain it for you.

Why that one earpiece on your AirPods runs out faster

The battery life of AirPods can be affected by several factors. So can the way you use the wireless earbuds. Whether you’re making calls or just listening to music.

But if you notice that one of your AirPods is draining faster than the other, there’s another reason. Once you remove your AirPods from the case, the system automatically selects one side to be used as a microphone, while the other serves only as a speaker. And yes, the side you use as a microphone drains faster.

By the way, not to be confused with Optimus Prime from Transformers, because this humanoid cannot turn into an electric car. Its latest version is now even better. Tesla proudly reports that it is even more agile. Probably because the sensors have been taken in hand. In any case, this news is a good distraction from a bigger problem: Autopilot in the cars. The company recalled two million cars just yesterday. EU targets X There doesn't seem to be a day when Elon Musk is not in the news. This time he is not under fire, but his platform X. This has everything to do with privacy. A complaint has been filed with the Dutch privacy watchdog by privacy rights organization NOYB. This is because the company is allegedly not enforcing its own advertising guidelines. Those guidelines state that political affiliations or religious beliefs may not be used to target advertising. However, X appears to be doing just that. Update for Google Maps Speaking of privacy, Google Maps is getting some new privacy features. These should allow users to further protect their data. Your recent activities can now be found in a central place in the app. You can delete the data from there very easily. This can be done one-by-one but also all at once. A window will then appear that tells you exactly what you're deleting. When exactly this update will be rolled out is still unknown. Battle between Apple and Beeper over iMessage continues The battle over the blue call buttons continues unabated. Apple is not picking up on the fact that Beeper has once again found a way to bring iMessage to Android and now appears to have blocked the service once again. The company previously managed to get around the Apple blockade by letting people log in va an Apple ID. At least a better solution than Nothing's earlier failed attack. Now Apple has put a stop to it again. "Apple appears to be deliberately preventing iMessages from being delivered to about 5 percent of Beeper Mini users," reports the company. Reinstalling the app would help. There is no definitive fix yet, but Beeper does let X know they are working on it. Apple appears to be deliberately blocking iMessages from being delivered to ~5% of Beeper Mini users. Uninstalling and reinstalling Beeper Mini fixes the issue. We won't have a fix tonight, but we're working on it. https://t.co/70KbYfcwjr - Beeper (@onbeeper) December 14, 2023 https://www.want.nl/ios17-3-iphone-beveiliging/ (Image: Mark Hofman/WANT)

Here’s how to solve it

So there’s nothing wrong with your AirPods if one of the two earbuds is draining faster. But it’s important to fix the problem quickly. That’s because if one side serves as the microphone too often, you run the risk of the battery failing faster, rendering the earpiece unusable. Fortunately, there is an easy solution.

Open Settings and tap your AirPods under your Apple ID name. Then scroll down and tap the Microphone option. Here, select Automatic switching between AirPods. That way, both earbuds will alternate microphone functions with each other, preventing battery overload.

Should one of the two earbuds already have battery problems, you can also choose to use the “healthy earpiece” as the microphone. That way you can straighten out the condition of the battery somewhat.

New AirPods in 2024?

Apple has wild plans for the AirPods in 2024. There may be three new versions of the new earbuds coming out this year. First, you can expect a new version of the standard model, the AirPods 4.
