Why Apple is dropping the ball with USB-C on the iPad

Apple’s tenth-generation iPad features a USB-C port. That shouldn’t be news to anyone. Not least because recent iterations of the Pro, Air and mini also feature such a port. So you’d think the Cupertino-based company would know what it’s doing by now. But now it appears the opposite is true.

Indeed, the USB-C port is a lot slower in terms of connection speed compared to the aforementioned models, according to a review by The Verge. In fact, the tenth-generation iPad features a USB 2.0 port, offering “only” a speed of 480 Mbps. What exactly does that mean?

Apple’s new iPad with old standard

Well, so Apple’s latest iPad has an old USB standard, with a lower speed. This is the same speed we previously encountered on the ninth-generation iPad. A notable detail is that that tablet still features a Lightning port. But for now, therefore, both connections offer the same transfer speed.

Other Apple iPad models offer faster transfer rates. For example, the iPad Pro with the M1 chip on board supports the Thunderbolt 3 standard, allowing it to transfer data at a maximum speed of 40 Gbps. The latest iPad Air supports speeds of up to 10 Gbps.

Not to be found

Unfortunately, such information cannot be found on Apple’s official website. Other media, meanwhile, are also making a stab at it and reporting exactly the same thing: this iPad has a low transfer rate. For many customers it may not matter, but even then this is important information.

So if for some reason you don’t want to wait too long for such a transfer, you would do well to invest in an Air or Pro (or a mini, which supports up to 5 Gbps). In addition, you can always use AirDrop: this is a wireless connection standard that also allows you to send files.
